The Smoking Ban Anniversary

This Month is the one-year anniversary of the smoking ban. In essence, it was the ban that encouraged many to give up smoking and lead a healthier lifestyle. And it may encourage others to transfer their dependent bad habit outside.

2805 people tried to quit smoking in West Essex from April 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008. There was a 57% success rate which equals to 1596 people giving up. In the district 705 people attempted to stop smoking from April 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008 and 445 of them succeeded which equals to a great success level of 63%.

Jeff Leach, landlord of the Old English Gentleman said: “The smoking ban had not affected his trade. The amount of people eating has increased over the last year and I’d say it’s probably because it’s a lot less smoky inside. I know the customers prefer it now as I’ve had a lot of positive comments over the year.”

Mr Leach explained: “There is a lot more activity outside now which obviously creates noise on the street and can be a problem for the local residents. I believe some customers have definitely cut down, perhaps not given up but definitely aren’t smoking as much anymore.”

Stuart Maddison, landlord of the Rose and Crown located in Ashdon, added: “A fair majority of the customers like the outcome of the smoking ban. The pub stays fresher and cleaner and before the ban there had been moaning about people smoking inside. It’s had a great influence on some customers as 10 regulars in the last four months have given up.”

Every Monday evening a clinic at the Saffron Walden Community Hospital, West Essex Stop Smoking Service offers a choice of group or one-to-one support with a trained specialist.

Study shows smokers are up to 4 times more likely to stop with the support of pharmaceutical aids and a specialist. Stop Smoking Support also offers home visits for people with respiratory or circulatory conditions.
