In Nottingham, officials initiated a new verification of shops that sell tobacco products. Such inspections are organized in order to identify if the retailers sell cigarettes to minors. Beginning with October 1, purchasing age for cigarettes rises from 16 to 18.
This kind of control offers a factual representation of the picture. There were cases when final picture was far from being classified as encouraging.
Those who were caught in the trap and sell tobacco products to minors are obliged to pay fine. Also, store can be deprived of license if such cases will occur again.
Passing a recent verification, Nottingham tobacco retailers pleased the trading standards officers. Definite results proved that 95% of tested retailers refused to sell tobacco to someone underage. This result pleased very much.
Caraline Ryan, from Nottingham's Trading Standards, said: “Nottingham's tobacco retailers have shown a high level of compliance over the summer which is pleasing.
“Trading Standards is committed to monitoring compliance with such legislation and undertakes regular programmes of test purchases to ensure consumer protection.
“We would advise anyone wishing to purchase cigarettes or tobacco products to ensure they carry appropriate identification with them if they look 21 or under.”
